A Conversation with Sam Baker — Musician & Artist

Sam Baker grew up in the small prairie town of Itasca, Texas, and worked as a bank examiner and whitewater river guide.

After surviving a bombing in Peru that changed the course of his life, he turned to writing, music, and painting as part of his recovery and a way to "explain the almost unexplainable."

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your journey to becoming the musician and artist you are today?

I was in a terrorist attack when I was younger and I needed a way to explain the almost unexplainable. Music and lyrics came first. Painting later.

Is there a particular quote, piece of art, or even a specific sound or smell that ignites your creative process?

Ritual. Working everyday. Persistence seems to be my most effective creative influence.

Tell us about your favorite project to date. What made it so special?

What ever I am working on now. Two big writing projects that I can’t talk about because it deflates the creative energy if I talk about it.

Can you tell us about your relationship with Willy and how he has influenced your creative life, whether through music, art, or the way you see the world?

Willy reached out and wanted to do a show. I trust that. One musician to another.

What does your creative process look like day to day? Are there certain tools, routines, or surroundings you find yourself returning to when you write music or paint?

I have a small studio. When I am not on the road I am in the studio everyday. Then something happens. Paint or music or words. Or cleaning.

In a world that often celebrates speed, what does "slowing down" mean to you?

I live in a rural area so I am not flooded with movement and energy. I made the choice to live in slow.

There are positives and negatives. Mostly positives.

What message or piece of advice would you offer to fellow musicians or illustrators starting their journeys?

Work. Work. Work. Even when you don’t believe.
